Here’s the latest Roots & Culture Mix from Better Must Come. It’s gonna be a “Reggae Summer Again.” Lots of new cuts on classic riddims and rocksteady too. No air horns! As usual, the mix features a nice selection of reggae artists from JA, UK, and EU too.
Tomorrow is Thursday, which means my friends at NYC’s own Deadly Dragon Sound will be putting together the Reggae Revive Session at Happy Ending in Chinatown again. Roots, rocksteady, and rub-a-dub in a strictly vinyl fashion. This week’s special guest is Jah Point.
Man, this event sounds like my cup of tea. Too bad it’s on the other side of the Atlantic! It’s a celebration of art in dancehall reggae, including early legends like Limonious, Jamaal Pete, Sassa, and UK Greensleeves artist Tony McDermott. This will be complimented with a more modern take on dancehall art from 5 contemporary artists too. Curated by Shimmy Shimmy and Al Fingers in association with Puma, BASS Festival, and Jamaica50. Going down in Birmingham and then London. Check all the deets over at Shimmy Shimmy. Here’s hoping the exhibit makes its way over to this side of the pond…

Selector JD, of Deadly Dragon Sound fame, just created this nice, mellow, soulful mix of 7″ records for NYC sports event/retailers RECESS.

Rub-a-Dub Style: The Roots of Modern Dancehall is Beth Lesser’s in-depth and academic book documenting the Jamaican genre from its inception to its current form. The excellent 350-page title is now available as a free download from the Beth Lesser site. I got in touch with Beth and she said this was in order to reach a wider audience and also to retain creative control over the endeavor. The printed version is also available at Lulu.
